There is not a lot to say about ULU. Obviously it's studenty. In fact I got chills as I entered the main doors and found myself in a typically college-like corridor, it felt like I was late for a lecture all over again. Luckily I was just here to see the Ting Tings, so I took a right up the stairs to the venue.
Once inside, the ULU concert hall feels a little less like you are in a university building, but only marginally so. The signs are still there; plenty of people sitting on the floor; a limited choice of weak lager (draught Carlsberg or cans of Cobra) in plastic cups at the bar; minimalist decor. The ULU is L-shaped, with a reasonably-sized rectangular room where the bands play, and a bar area at the back. This means you can grab your drink and get back to the action in front of the stage, or if you'd prefer you can just find a floor space around the bar and ignore the supporting acts.
The sound at ULU is quite good, and they get some good up-and-coming bands, but I felt it was a little lacking in character, which is fair enough for a University Union venue, there are far worse. Worth attending if there is a band you really want to see.
